40 Days of Focus

Week 6: 40 Days of Focus

By on October 17, 2016

Become wise by walking with the wise;
    hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.

Proverbs 13:20 MSG

     In this final installment of our journey we turn our attention towards those important friendships and partnerships that God has given us. In the above passage we are given wisdom concerning the relationships in our lives. The writer warns us of the benefits and consequences that accompany our choice of friends. He says that we become like those we surround ourselves with.

“What kind of people are you surrounding yourself with?”

     If you knew that you would become like the 5 people you spent the most time with who would surround yourself with? As I have set out to embrace my calling to multi-cultural ministry, I have purposely spent more time with people who can help me grow in this area. On my list of people I talk to and spend the most time with are an experienced community developer, an executive pastor of a large multi-cultural church, a budding community leader, a young pastor and my wife. Each of these people add specific value to my life journey. They each make me better by adding their experiences and perspectives to my own. The same is true for those you spend the most time with. This is why it is so important for you to take inventory of those around you.

     Our exercise this week involves looking closely at the 5 people you talk to and/or spend the most time with. Make of list of these five people and think about what they have in common. Think about what they add to your life and what they tale away. We are driven towards 3 main questions:

  1. Do my relationships match who I was or who I am becoming?
  2. Are my relationships by default or design?
  3. What kind of people do I need to add to my circle?

By asking these questions we begin to lay a clear path to move us from where we are to where God wants us to be. Once the path is clear the responsibility is now yours to own. I believe the next season of your life is too important to approach without a clear purpose and vision. Who will you surround yourself with as you move into God’s vision for your life?
